– 2018 PALA VERMENTINO DI SARDEGNA ‘I FIORI’ –

This week we’re staying in Italy for our Wine Wednesday. We’re going to Sardinia, Italy’s second-biggest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Sicily. a 20-minute drive from the capital of Sardinia, Cagliari, we find a tiny commune called Serdiana, which is our destination for today. Our Cellar Pick of the week comes from the Azienda Agricola Pala:

The Azienda Agricola Pala (or Pala estate) was founded in 1950. Mario Pala is now the third generation of the family taking care of the vines of his family with the help of his wife Rita and the fourth generation of the family represented by his sons Massimiliano, Elisabetta and Mariantonietta.

Besides terroir, tradition and respect for the environment, the most important ingredients that the Pala family add to their wines, is the passion of winemaking and to express the family character and the terroir of this extraordinary island.

The Vermentino grapes for the ‘i Fiori’ come from the Is Crabilis vineyard. It’s located on a sandy limestone hill entirely covered with vines. The clayey limestone of its base gradually becomes looser towards the summit with layers of limestone. From its summit, at about 250 meters above sea level, it dominates the valley and has a fantastic view of the Seven Brothers. The highest peaks in the southern region of Sardinia.

After a first cleaning of the grapes, they were softly pressed and a selection of yeasts was added. The juice was left to ferment in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 15° C. At the end of the fermentation, after a light clarification it was put to rest for a few months in stainless steel tanks, before bottling.

The Pala provides a fresh lively citrus and ripe stone fruit nose. The palate is vibrant and textural with refreshing acidity. The vegetable notes are predominant, smooth and full with good depth and well balanced, with a long persistent aftertaste.
