Cellar Pick of the Week: Casali Del Barone Barbera 150+1
Origin: Piemonte, Italy
Grape varietal: Barbera

This wine isn’t produced by just one winery but is an end product of a beautiful corporation between several wine-loving people in Piemonte, Italy. The key stakeholders are Vallebelbo, Schenk and Casali Del Barone.

The Cantina Vallebelbo Sca is an agricultural cooperative that collects and vinifies the grapes produced by 160 wine growers that have about 500 hectares of precious vineyards in the heart of the Langhe, on the hills around Santo Stefano Belbo. This wine-growing area is the most important center for the production of Moscato Bianco grapes, which give birth to 3 sweet and aromatic wines, famous all over the world for their uniqueness: Asti DOCG, Moscato d Asti DOCG and the new born Asti Secco DOCG, all the with Controlled and Guaranteed Denomination of Origin. The skillful processing and continuous improvement of the techniques of cultivation of the Nebbiolo, Moscato and Barbera vines have led to extraordinary results that appear in the splendor of a unique landscape in the world. The constant and passionate dedication of people who have been cultivating vineyards for generations following traditions and farming knowledge have created a territory of exceptional universal value . These are the reasons that have led UNESCO to name our hills as a World Heritage Site.

The Passion of the 150 members of the Vallebelbo Cooperative combined with the experience of Schenk Italian wineries is how 150 plus 1 is born. Schenk Italian Wineries is by far one of the most significant wine producers at national level. Founded in 1952 in Reggio Emilia, and relocated in 1960 to Ora, South Tyrol, the headquarters of the first winery are closely tied with the production area. One of their brands is Casali Del Barone.

The queen of black grapes is the protagonist of Casali del Barone, a range of wines that express the tradition and history of Piedmont region, between Langhe and Monferrato. The warm aromas, intense taste and powerful aftertaste typical of this area, Unesco heritage, are celebrated in the whole range of Casali del Barone. The grapes of Nebbiolo and Barbera represent the unique taste of Barbaresco, Barolo and Barbera.

This wine is a dry style, full and lively. Excellent with food, particularly red meat. Careful selection of the best Barbera and Nebbiolo grapes followed by the slower control temperature vinification gives birth to this excellent wine. With intense red colour and floral hints, combined with spicy notes. Slightly tannic thanks for the short aging large wooden barrels . A great value introduction to quality Italian wines.
